Recently, I had a meeting with Bruce, a possible client of our book marketing program. He has heard so many stories about how most authors that have the best seller designation aren’t really selling books. I love it when it’s time to debate what we master. Again, I will say it time and time again best seller strategy is the first strategy but should not be the end of your book selling marketing plan. Book marketing online is about algorithms not popularity (click to tweet). Instead of theory, I pulled out a sheet of paper and gave Bruce the following calculations:
Best Seller Launch: During this time, I would reduce the price of your book (the eBook version) to $0.99 cents. In the launch, it is likely that we will sell 300 to 500 books. So let’s take the bottom number of 300 units sold. We do these 99 cent pushes every quarter. The math: 4 quarters in 12 months times 300 units equals 1200. 1200 units x $0.99 = $1188.00.
Why do these pushes once per quarter? To keep the algorithm working in your favor.
Autograph Copies Upsell For Opt In Subscribers: In this strategy, we send out physical copies to the audience for which you want to position your expertise. This offer gives them the book as a collector’s item but they must pay for upgraded packaging and shipping. Approximately 1000 books x $12.99= $12,990.00
Give Away Days: We also give away about the kindle version of your book 3 times per year. 3750 x 0.00 = $0
Why? Again, this helps with the algorithms.
Then we get your book in front of book clubs, virtual book tours, book directories, independent bookstores, apply discounts where needed and the end result averages at 5287 physical books sold at $9.99 and 4001 ebooks sold at $5.99 for a grand total of $90,961.12.

And who says your book is only a foot in the door strategy?
BTW, if you are looking at your book as a foot in the door strategy and you don’t have an ISBN number for your kindle version, you are losing positioning. Some places look at how many books your moving to find who they want to pitch.
